Now, while some may scoff at brawny Simon’s iconic rough-and-tumble outfit from his original NES game and its many remakes in this latest Smash, contrary to reputation, he has also been known to sport a somewhat more tailored look at times. As you can see, that debut, and on a defining Nintendo console no less, precedes games featuring recent popular Smash guests like Bayonetta and Cloud Strife by quite a bit. And more importantly, what in the name of Master Hand’s Final Destination are guys who look like Conan the Barbarian and Capcom’s Ryu in pseudo-Gothic cosplay doing in a Nintendo franchise as big and popular as Smash? Well, truth be told, they probably should have been there a long time ago… Simon Belmont – the leather-clad man, the whip-cracking myth, the long-haired gaming legendĬourtesy of Konami, Simon Belmont strutted onto the gaming scene in Japan with Akumajo Dracula for the Famicom Disk System in 1986 and one year later in North America with the rebranded Castlevania for the Nintendo Entertainment System. What has Smash gotten right and wrong in this crossover. But when discussing the history of video game development, there is a longitudinal significance to Castlevania characters, especially Simon and Richter, joining Super Smash Bros. Yes, there’s the new Netflix season, the emergence of Koji Igarashi’s fledgling Bloodstained franchise, and the rise of indie Metroidvania games in the headlines. I mean, you might just be wondering who exactly these Castlevania characters are and why they matter to Nintendo’s premier fighting game in the first place. Castlevania hasn’t exactly had a hit game lately. Rool, right? Oh, and Dark Samus? And…Chrom, too? You are, aren’t you? (You Fire Emblem fans out there are gonna ship that, huh?)Įh, I suppose I don’t blame you. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch! Wait, you’re more excited about King K. Swish! Crack! Whoosh! Hear that? It’s the sound of a million flickering candles being smashed! Friends, Simon and Richter Belmont from the Castlevania franchise are coming to Super Smash Bros.
